ELLI COX My signature stamp, a Japanese hanko, was created for me in Tokyo by my sumi-e teacher, Sensei Tori Hashizume. We share the second character (To- ri , El- li).I honor Sensei by pressing my hanko into the clay. |

Each piece is built with my hands and a few simple tools, and it is my hope that they bring a smile and a moment of pleasure. The pieces usually have some of the surface burnished with a smooth pebble, giving it a lustrous shine and an invitation to touch. This ancient process is quiet and meditative. My shapes come from the process and the clay is my chosen medium for translating emotion to form. I have a reverence for simplicity and for negative space and balance. The surfaces are unglazed and so the pieces are non-functional. (CARE: a light dusting is sufficient and water should never be used. Direct sunlight is also detrimental to pieces that include handmade papers.) I enjoy the natural beauty of the clay and how the shadows define the shapes that occur. The black work is a result of an additional reduction firing with sawdust. The smoldering carbons permeate the (white or red) clay and cause it to turn black.
